The unpredictability of a cruise night is something we love, especially as photographers. In a way, it’s kind of like big game hunting. You get your gear ready, take the trek to your destination, and scour the grounds in search of the kill shot. This is something only photographers could understand.
On this particular night, we hit the Laurel Canyon Blvd Cruise Night hosted by Primeros Car Club, and it didn’t disappoint. Interestingly enough, the Laurel Canyon cruise takes place on one single block, and to be honest; it’s a blessing because shooting on Crenshaw, Whittier Blvd, or Van Nuys Blvd is grueling as they run the span of a few blocks.
If you love cars and have never been to a lowrider cruise night, I suggest you go. Each night and every location brings its own special cars, characters, and characteristics. Since most lowriders don’t make long-distance trips (unless it’s for big cruise nights or car shows), you’ll usually find cars and car clubs that are somewhat local that specific area. There’s also different lighting conditions to worry about. The lights on Whittier Blvd give everything a crappy orange tint, Crenshaw’s cool but congested, and Laurel Canyon Blvd seems to hit the sweet spot.
So what can you expect on a cruise night? For starters, you can expect plenty of custom paint jobs and lowriders at all levels. Some are entry-level projects, others are streetcars, and then you have your street/show cars. There’s plenty of chrome, custom paint jobs, and don’t let the stereotypes fool you. The lowrider crowd is friendly and welcoming. It’s a fun time filled with families, friends, and folks who are eager to share the fruits of their labor and hard work and on this particular night were blessed to have have the usual suspects such as Primeros, Dukes, Ruthless Ryders and Neu Exposure just to name a few.
Just around the corner, you’ll find a parking lot to a local strip mall that holds all the overflow that doesn’t fit in the Carls Jr. parking lot. Although you’ll miss all the action on Laurel Canyon Blvd, you’ll be treated to a parking lot full of cars.

Spotted this killer El Camino on 15-inch wires from Dukes Car Club as well as this vintage letterman jacket featuring the plaques of various clubs from the San Fernando Valley.
There’s no other part of car culture that has such a vivid array of paint jobs. Different patterns, ghost fades, pinstripes and candy paint are the main ingredients but what makes them different are the palettes they use and the designs they lay down.
In a lot full of Chevy’s, this Buick Skylark was no ugly duckling. According to the owner, he’s had it for 7 years, and it looked like it had just rolled out of the paint booth. Definitely something different. Be on the lookout for a feature on this gem.
